The aim of the North Carolina Community College System’s statewide public awareness campaign for adult Basic Skills/Literacy is to reach every household in North Carolina with the message that Basic Skills/Literacy is a critical part of the solution to our state’s urgent economical problems.
The main goal of this three-year campaign is to
help the public, other agencies, and partners understand the value
of Basic Skills/Literacy programs to North Carolina and to
increase support for all the work the programs do.
The Race 4 Literacy campaign is a
three-year event, from 2003 to 2006. It started in July 2003 with
a focus on staff development, recruiting more students, and the
hosting of community awareness events by literacy providers. In
the second year, the focus is on creating partnerships with
businesses, community agencies and other local organizations.
These partnerships serve to assist and help local programs in
serving students by providing space, resources, funds, and
volunteer staff.
In year three, the focus will be on providing
information to policy makers, funding resources and public
officials. This outreach will be carried out with special events
and local activities to solicit additional funding and policy
support.
A statewide toll free hotline number
(1-800-553-9759) and referral for adults who need to enroll or are
willing to volunteer is operational.
The North Carolina Community College System
Office Basic Skills Department has partnered with FOX 50-TV to
produce educational announcements (vignettes and facts) that are
aired on FOX 50 television in the Triangle viewing area. All local
programs have received a copy of these announcements for their own
use, including airing on other local television stations.
The Basic Skills department is working in
conjunction with UNC-TV to expand its “Race 4 Literacy”
promotion.
The Basic Skills Department of the North
Carolina Community College System Office has developed a
brochure,
newsletter, and other
promotional material highlighting Basic Skills/Literacy and its
statewide “Race 4 Literacy” campaign. Copies of these
brochures are available to local programs in print form and on
compact discs. Local programs may adapt these brochures to fit
their needs.
At the local level, community colleges and
community-based organizations are sponsoring local events and
activities highlighting their programs. The activities are
compiled to document the impact of the statewide campaign.
