NC Community College System presidential search committee
organizes, seeks consultant
RALEIGH - The Presidential Search Committee of the
State Board of Community Colleges decided at its first meeting today
(Monday, April 2) to seek proposals from search consultants for
assistance in identifying the next president of the North Carolina
Community College System.
Members of the committee, chaired by Herbert Watkins of Richfield,
directed David Sullivan, assistant to the president for legal
affairs for the NC Community College System, to draft a request for
proposals (RFP) for committee review and public posting as soon as
possible.
After lengthy discussion at the open public meeting, the committee
decided to invite proposals for a consultant to assist in a search
that committee members anticipate will draw national as well as
North Carolina applicants.
In addition to Watkins, members of the search committee appointed by
State Board Chair Hilda Pinnix-Ragland are: Norma B. Turnage of
Rocky Mount, vice chair; Dr. Bob Greene of Winston-Salem; G. Gordon
"Buddy" Greenwood of Asheville; Anne-Marie Knighton of Edenton; Dr. Linwood Powell of Fayetteville, John Q.
Shaw of Dunn, and student member, Bently Pagura from Alamance
Community College. Richard Sullins, executive director of the State
Board, and Sullivan are staff support.
The committee will meet again at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, April 18 at a
location to be determined at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro.
The State Board will hold its regular April meeting at Wayne
Community College Thursday and Friday of that week.
H. Martin Lancaster, president of the NC Community College System,
has announced he will retire on May 1, 2008 (NEXT YEAR). Former
Robeson Community College president, Fred Williams, now the
executive vice president and chief operating officer for the System
Office, has announced his September 1, 2007 retirement.
At its March meeting, the State Board discussed its plan to select a
replacement for Williams. The person selected will serve as
"president-elect," second-in-command until Lancaster's retirement in
May 2008 and then become president. Then, the new president will
select a new chief operating officer to present to the State Board
for approval.
All inquiries about the Search Committee should be directed to David
Sullivan in Raleigh, 919-807-6961.
