Celebrating 40 years of "College That Really Works" for North Carolina
STATE BOARD TO RECEIVE CONSULTANT’S REPORT
Raleigh: The State Board of Community Colleges meets on Thursday, June 19 at 10:30 AM. The meeting will originate from the State Board Room in the Caswell Building. Most members will participate in the meeting by telephone.
A major item for discussion is a corrected report from Dr. Kent Caruthers, of MGT of America, Inc. Dr. Caruthers was hired by the State Board of Community Colleges and the Legislative Education Oversight Committee as a consultant to study the organization and structure of the North Carolina Community College System and the formula for instructional and administrative support. He was to also determine if the State of North Carolina could realize any administrative savings from the consolidation of some colleges or functions. While the consultant did identify three candidates for consolidation, he also said he doubted "that the savings from institutional consolidation are worth the effort."
The Finance and Capital Needs Committee of the State Board received the draft report from Dr. Caruthers on June 5. Several discrepancies in enrollment numbers and funding figures were discovered and had to be corrected before a final report could be turned over to the entire State Board. Those changes have been made.
The State Board will receive and discuss the report and release it to the General Assembly. The study was mandated in legislation enacted last year.
