Distance Learning Conference to focus on new technologies

RALEIGH - Digital Imaging, Interactive 3-D Objects, Nomadic Moodle, Social Networking and Flinged Migration may not be terms the average instructor uses, but are the tools of the trade for those who teach on the Internet or with other distance learning methods. Those distance learning instructors, from every education level, will gather in New Bern to learn new technologies from state and national distance learning experts.

Hundreds of professionals involved in distance learning will gather April 2 – 4 at the New Bern Conference and Visitors Center. The conference attracts instructors at every level from kindergarten to graduate school, but more than 90% of those participating come from the North Carolina Community College System.

The conference formally opens at 9:30 on Wednesday, April 2, with a keynote address by Dr. Mark David Milliron, president and CEO of Catalyze Learning International, who will discuss challenges in education for the future. Milliron will share his perspective on how millennials, gen-x’ers and baby boomers teaching and learning together make modern education a complex process. He will talk about how a new learning generation is taking shape.

Marci Powell, president of the United States Distance Learning Association, is the luncheon presenter on Wednesday. Powell will discuss new and emerging issues related to distance learning on a national level. The session begins at 11:45.

Technology constantly changes and teaching skills must constantly be upgraded to keep the student engaged. The conference is all about professional development and participants will have a wealth of opportunities to improve their teaching skills. Workshops cover a myriad of topics as diverse as delivery methods:

• Mobile Learning Tools and Activities
• You Can’t Teach THAT online!
• Simulation-Based Learning Using Interactive 3-Dimensional Objects
• Paving the Digital Divide
• What, Why, When, How and Should Educators Podcast?
• YouTube/Google Video
• Building a Borderless Community
• Screencasting Production and Delivery: Best (and Worst) Practices
• Camtasia 5.0
• Using Moodle in Online Courses
• Fundamental of Copyright Law for Educators
• Social Networking: Much More Than MySpace

Trendsetters and innovators in distance learning will be honored at the Awards Reception on Wednesday evening. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. in the ballroom.
