GlaxoSmithKline donates $400,000 to North Carolina Community Colleges
Rocky Mount, NC– GlaxoSmithKline has awarded $100,000 to each of four community colleges in North Carolina. The colleges include Johnston Community College (Smithfield), Nash Community College (Rocky Mount), Vance-Granville Community College (Henderson) and Wake Technical Community College (Raleigh). Each school will use the funds to establish the GlaxoSmithKline Scholarship Endowment Fund. The announcement was made at a news conference at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount on Monday, May 23.
"Education continues to be a very important area for GSK," said Mary Linda Andrews, Director, US Community Partnerships at GlaxoSmithKline. "We are pleased to see the accomplishments being made at these institutions and we are happy to make this contribution in hopes that some very deserving students will be able to fulfill their dreams."
"Community colleges change lives by giving adults a sound education and preparing them to enter the workforce with requisite skills, especially in the technology and biosciences industry," said H. Martin Lancaster, North Carolina Community College System President. "We are proud partners with industry in North Carolina. GlaxoSmithKline is an excellent partner that is dedicated to education. This endowment funding will help students prepare for the future."
Eligibility for the GSK Scholarship Endowment Fund will be based on the following criteria:

***Student must be enrolled in an
electrical/electronics technology, electronics engineering, biotechnology,
computer engineering technology, industrial pharmaceutical technology or
industrial systems technology program, or currently pursuing an associate’s
degree in science or other approved science or engineering related curriculum. |

***Students will be selected based on academic
achievement, with consideration to financial need. | |
|
***Students must complete and submit a scholarship
application. | |
| ***Additional eligibility requirements may be required by the community colleges. |
***Recipients will carry the distinction of the "GlaxoSmithKline Scholar."
Before presenting the checks to the college presidents, Andrews praised community colleges for the "quality education" students receive, particularly noting the high performance of college transfer students. "GSK thanks you for all the value you bring, and will continue to bring, to our state."
