EXCELLENT SMALL BUSINESS CENTERS TO BE
HONORED AT STATE BOARD OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES MEETING
RALEIGH: The State Board of Community Colleges will take time out to recognize the excellent service provided by three of the community college’s Small Business Centers (SBC). The Excellent Small Business Center Awards is part of the January meeting at 9:00 in the Caswell Building on Friday, January 17.
Two workers laid off from an apparel company found a way to open their own embroidery business using equipment bought from their former employer. A retired Marine opens his own business and is named the Small Business Person of the Year in his community. A Charlotte-based business finds a way to avoid major financial troubles by developing a sound business strategy.
These three success stories were made possible because each small business entrepreneur used the services of the SBC located at their local community college. Each SBC has been recognized as recipients of the Regional Award for Excellence, one will be selected to receive the Statewide Award for Excellence. Each SBC has contributed to numerous business success stories and created innovative programs to serve its clients.
In addition to helping the owners of Mayberry Embroidery make lemonade out of the lemons they were served when they lost their jobs, the SBC at Surry Community College also established on-line courses on Starting a Home-Based Business and Building an On-Line Business. The center was also instrumental in developing a support group to help minority business owners increase business volume.
Coastal Carolina Community College’s SBC was instrumental in getting Gary Herbold a firm start for his Furniture Medic franchise. Now, the retired marine is the Jacksonville-Onslow Small Business Person of the Year, recognizing the impact his small business has on the local and national economy. Coastal’s SBC, recognizing the explosion of home-based businesses, hosted an exposition exclusively for home-based businesses. The SBC also offered special programs targeted to the unique needs of the budding entrepreneur doing business with the government or those retired marines eager to start a business of their own.
The SBC at Central Piedmont Community College offered workshops like "The Great Game of Business" and a "Critical Numbers Workshop" that helped the owners of Suite 1000 get back on track. The SBC helped them develop a working plan and understand the value of following that plan. The SBC was also instrumental in finding a home for city’s Small Business Resource Center.
