STATE BOARD OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES APPROVES 2000 EXPANSION
BUDGET REQUEST FOR SUMMER SESSION
Summer Term Funding Is a Key Emphasis
RALEIGH -- Today, the State Board of Community Colleges approved a budget request for expansion funds for the 2000 Legislative Short Session. The budget request totals $96,278,747.
Included in the budget request is $7,177,623 for summer term funding. H. Martin Lancaster, North Carolina Community College System President, said that funding for the summer term will expand the programs and services of the community colleges. "This funding enables adult learners to complete a certificate, diploma or associate degree program or to obtain the specialized skills necessary to re-enter the workforce more quickly," he said. Lancaster also said that summer term funding allows community colleges to better utilize special facilities and equipment and enables faculty to teach for longer periods.
Also included in the budget request are $21.7 million to cover growth in annual enrollment; $28.9 million in instruction costs; $14.7 million in occupational continuing education; $4.5 million for libraries; $16.5 million for distance learning services and off campus centers; $2.5 for Small Business Centers and the Center for Applied Textile Technology. The budget request includes slightly more than $1.2 million to make up for any lost enrollment at eastern community colleges due to Hurricane Floyd.
In other business, state board members passed a resolution supporting "the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association in efforts to secure additional funding for faculty and staff salaries to the national average in a reasonable series of steps." The board "further welcomes the support of the Faculty Association in improving the overall funding for the North Carolina Community College System."
The State Board of Community Colleges will vote on capital needs of the System at its April meeting.
