Community College Has New Name
Raleigh -- South Piedmont Community College is the name chosen for North Carolina's new regional community college serving Anson and Union counties. The name is effective immediately.
The Board of Trustees for the new college, located in Polkton, North Carolina, chose the name Tuesday night following a 30-day contest that generated 441 different suggestions. Four people submitted the chosen name. They will share equally the $500 prize which was to be offered to the person whose suggestion was selected.
A team of consultants was hired to study the community college needs of the region including Anson and Union counties. They presented a dual-campus recommendation to the State Board of Community Colleges, which approved the plan in April. The new community college was created in May through legislation that abolished Anson Community College to provide a charter for the new dual campus, regional community college serving Anson and Union counties.
Dr. Don Altieri was named president of the new regional college during the new board’s first meeting held July 1. Altieri has served as president of Anson Community College since September, 1993.
The North Carolina Community College System enrolls more than 710,000 students in 58 community colleges and one specialized technology center, the North Carolina Center for Applied Textile Technology. The system is the state's primary provider of workforce training and education, adult education and basic literacy services.
