State Board of Community Colleges to honor its best at Day of Recognition Luncheon

RALEIGH: The State Board of Community Colleges will celebrate outstanding service to the North Carolina Community College System on Friday, November 16. Distinguished individuals will be honored at the annual Day of Recognition Luncheon at the Holiday Inn at Research Triangle Park.

The noon luncheon follows the November State Board meeting, which will be held at 9:00 a.m. in the Caswell Building. The State Board agenda is attached.

The first award to be presented is the I.E. Ready Award, the highest honor the State Board bestows. Three outstanding individuals will receive the I.E. Ready: former State Treasurer Harlan E. Boyles, former United States Senator James T. Broyhill, and the late Joseph W. Grimsley who was Richmond Community College President.

The I.E. Ready Award recognizes people who have made important contributions to the community college movement locally, statewide and nationally. It is presented to individuals who have contributed significantly to the establishment and growth of North Carolina’s community colleges.

Four additional awards will be presented at the luncheon.

The Excellence in Teaching (EIT) award, endowed by R. J. Reynolds, will go to an individual named from among five finalists:

Beulah "Ann" Condrey, an Interpreter Education Instructor at Blue Ridge Community College|
Johnny Underwood, a Sociology Instructor at Carteret Community College
Roselyn V. Armstrong, Occupational Therapy Instructor at Pitt Community College
Phyllis Caviness, a Nursing Instructor at Richmond Community College
Lonnie M. Chase, a History Instructor at Wilson Technical Community College.

The President’s Leadership Award will be presented to Daryl Mitchell, past president of the North Carolina Community College Comprehensive Student Government Association.

Two awards new to the NCCCS will also be presented at the luncheon. Dr. Donald Cameron, president at Guilford Technical Community College is the recipient of the first President of the Year award, endowed by Wachovia. Sidney R. "Reg" Boland, Associate Vice President for Student Services at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is the first recipient of the System Staff Award, endowed by BB&T.
