Public comments sought in North Carolina Community College System presidential search
RALEIGH – The Presidential Search Committee of the State Board of Community Colleges will host a series of three public forums to invite input from the education community, the business and government arena, and the general public about characteristics and qualifications desirable in the next president.
H. Martin Lancaster, president of the North Carolina Community College System, retires May 1, 2008 after nearly 11 years of service. Soliciting public comment and ideas is an important step in identifying potential candidates to succeed him.
State Board Chair Hilda Pinnix-Ragland emphasized that public comment is essential and she strongly encourages participation in the three forums.
“We are looking for the person who will head an organization that is so critical to the future of North Carolina, Pinnix-Ragland said. “It is important that we hear from the public as we work to find the most qualified individual.”
The first forum is at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC, which is Lancaster’s hometown. The second hearing is at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. The last forum takes place in Raleigh in the Legislative Building.
The Presidential Search Committee is chaired by Herbert Watkins and Norma Turnage is vice chair. Ms. Turnage will host the forums in Goldsboro and Raleigh. Mr. Watkins will host the Hickory forum. They are scheduled as follows:
- Thursday, June 21, 2007, Wayne Community College, Wayne Learning Center, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
- Monday, July 9, 2007, Catawba Valley Community College, Administration Building Auditorium, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
- Wednesday, July 11, 2007, NC Legislative Building, Legislative Auditorium. 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Registration is required for those wishing to be heard at the forums and all comments should be related to qualifications and characteristics desirable in the next president. Those wishing to speak should contact Richard Sullins at the System Office at least two business days before the forum by phone (919) 807-6969 or e-mail sullinsr@nccommunitycolleges.edu .
There will be a registration sheet at each forum. On-site registrants will be given the opportunity to speak if there is time remaining after all pre-registered persons have spoken. There will be a time limit of five minutes for comments. The Committee would appreciate a written copy of prepared remarks.
