Community College System Presidential Search Committee emphasizes open search,
begins application process

RALEIGH - The men and women conducting the search for the next president of the North Carolina Community College System want potential candidates to understand one vital fact -- the search is completely open, with nobody guaranteed an "inside track."

At the committee's meeting in Raleigh August 16, Chairman Herbert Watkins of Richfield stated emphatically that the State Board of Community Colleges had charged the search committee with conducting a national search focused on identifying the best leader for the system, which includes 58 comprehensive community colleges.

Committee members heard a detailed report on the progress of the search from Dr. Parker Chesson, a consultant with Gold Hill Associates of Asheville, contracted to assist the committee in the search.

Dr. Chesson reported that advertisements for the position began running in national publications August 3. All applications received by September 14 are guaranteed review by the consultants and the committee; those received later may be reviewed at the committee's discretion. While Gold Hill had received a few applications by the time of the meeting, Dr. Chesson predicted that most would come in just before the deadline.

The committee meets again at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 20, in Raleigh to refine questions for candidate interviews and plans an all-day session beginning at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 2, to review applications and select interviewees.

Committee members have established a schedule calling for first-round interviews of up to five candidates by October 17 and selection of three finalists for presentation to the full State Board of Community Colleges by November 15.

The Presidential Search Committee is a special committee of the State Board of Community Colleges appointed by Hilda Pinnix-Ragland of Cary, chair of the State Board. In addition to Chairman Watkins, committee members are:

Richard Sullins, executive director of the State Board, and David Sullivan, assistant to the president for legal affairs, provide staff support to the committee. Questions about the search should be directed to Sullivan at 919-807-6961. Details of the search process are available on the website of the North Carolina Community College System at http://www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/External_Affairs/President/presidentialsearchcommittee.htm

The North Carolina Community College System enrolls more than 800,000 students in 58 comprehensive community colleges. Internationally recognized for the scope and quality of its programs, the System is North Carolina's primary provider of workforce preparation and adult education.
