Dr. Mary Siedow on UNC-TV’s "North Carolina People"
RALEIGH: September is Literacy Month and the perfect time for North Carolina to hear from an expert in the fight against illiteracy. Dr. Mary Siedow, Director of the State Literacy Resource Center, located here at the North Carolina Community College System Office, is this week’s guest on North Carolina People. The program is hosted by William Friday and airs on Friday, September 28, at 8:30 PM and repeats Sunday, September 30, at 5:30 PM.
Nearly one quarter of North Carolina adults cannot fill out an application for a Social Security card or identify more than one piece of information in a sports article. The Literacy Resource Center plays a major role in the fight against illiteracy, and Dr. Siedow leads the battle. "The LRC provides an opportunity for North Carolina's literacy community to come together in increasingly collaborative ways," says Siedow.
The NC Literacy Resource Center fosters networking among organizations concerned with basic skills and literacy education for adults, assists North Carolina's literacy community in providing quality services to adults in the state, and serves as a link between the National Institute for Literacy and the North Carolina Literacy Community.
Dr. Siedow discusses many of the causes for North Carolina’s illiteracy problem with Mr. Friday and shares information on the various literacy programs across the state.
This edition of NC People is part of UNC-TV’s yearlong literacy campaign that began this month.
North Carolina People is broadcast on UNC-TV, the statewide 11-station network of the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television.
