Swine production technology on display at the General Assembly

RALEIGH: Some say politics run on barbecue. On Tuesday, May 3, North Carolina legislators will have a chance to learn where that barbecue comes from. Sampson Community College will stage a demonstration in the North Lobby of the Legislative Building that shows how technology will improve swine production in North Carolina. The demonstration, complete with ham and sausage biscuits, begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs through 3:00 p.m.

Sampson Community College, located in the heart of pork production country, will demonstrate how, thanks to Golden LEAF, swine production will be more efficient in North Carolina. The college will demonstrate a high-tech swine semen analyzer, purchased with Biotechnology Equipment Grant funds received from Golden LEAF as a part of the NCCCS’s BioNetwork.

Sampson CC is located within 25 miles of four of the state’s five major pork producers. These companies, along with many smaller pork producers, now have access to this state-of-the-art equipment that will reduce the variation in swine production through genetic improvement.

There are only five of these swine semen analyzers in commercial use in the country. The equipment at Sampson is new and will help North Carolina’s pork producers achieve efficient and consistent swine production. The goal is more pounds of pork from fewer boars. The equipment helps identify the swine semen that is most productive and therefore lead to more pregnant sows.

H. Martin Lancaster, NCCCS President and Dr. Bill Aiken, Sampson CC President will attend the presentation. Dr. Steve Matthis, Sampson CC Livestock and Poultry Department Chair and Dr. David Bishop, a reproduction physiologist and evening instructor at the community college will demonstrate the swine semen analyzer.

Startup funding for NCCCS BioNetwork was provided by Golden LEAF. BioNetwork is seeking continuing funding from the NC Legislature for this important initiative. More information about the initiative can be found at the BioNetwork website: www.ncbionetwork.org.
