Dr. R. Scott Ralls, President
North Carolina Community College System
In these difficult budget times, I appreciate that the 2008-09 expansion budget allows the North Carolina Community College System to continue its focus on training North Carolina’s workforce while increasing our educational offerings in high-demand areas such as allied health and technical education. Just as this was a lean year in the General Assembly, it will be a challenging year for our 58 community colleges as they face increasing enrollment growth in job training and retraining programs that are always needed when economic times are tough.
I also appreciate the General Assembly recognizing our System’s work in programs such as Minority Male Mentoring and customized training. Additionally, we value the pay increases for our faculty and staff, and we look forward to getting those salaries up to the national average as soon as possible so our System can retain the dedicated professionals who work so hard to educate our students, North Carolina’s workforce of tomorrow.
I thank our state leaders for their efforts to continue to move North Carolina’s community colleges forward in meeting today’s workplace and education challenges, and I look forward to working with them in the long session to ensure that our citizens and communities have the tools they need to meet the changing needs of our economy.
Hilda Pinnix-Ragland, Chair
State Board of Community Colleges
On behalf of the State Board of the North Carolina Community College System, I want to thank our state leaders for continuing much-needed support for our community colleges and for allowing expansion in high-demand health and technical education curricula. The 2008-09 budget reflects the priorities of our Board and our System, and we appreciate the General Assembly and Gov. Easley’s recognition of the many education and economic contributions our community colleges make to North Carolina.
