COMMUNITY COLLEGE GRADUATE HONORED WITH PRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP AWARD
RALEIGH – Megan McCollum, a graduate of Rockingham Community College (RCC) and now a student at North Carolina State University, was presented the President’s Leadership Award by North Carolina Community College System President H. Martin Lancaster. This award was established to honor students who have helped to improve campus life for their fellow students and have made significant contributions to their colleges and surrounding communities.
The award was presented on Friday, November 19 at the Day of Recognition luncheon at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center. In presenting the award, President Lancaster congratulated and thanked Megan for her efforts as a student leader.
In accepting the award, Megan enthusiastically praised the people who have helped her reach her achievements. She thanked her instructors, her community college president and most important, she said, she thanked her family. She told the audience, "Life is too precious not to take the time to notice and recognize your family."
McCollum received her Associate in Science degree from RCC this past May, after first receiving the Outstanding Student Award in April. During her time at RCC she was captain of the college’s first women’s soccer team, served as Student Government Association president, was named an All-USA Academic Team second team winner, was RCC Homecoming Queen and an NCCCS Academic Excellence winner.
Megan has distinguished herself as someone who loves to be involved. Throughout her community college career Megan worked as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, the North Carolina Big Sweep, The Adopt-a-Highway Program, and the Reidsville Soup Kitchen. She also is a biology tutor and an assistant high school soccer coach.
Megan is majoring in Agronomy at NC State with a concentration in Crop Production. Her minor is Coaching Education. After graduation from NCSU, Megan plans to pursue a mater’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science with a concentration in Leadership at UNC-Greensboro.
Her participatory spirit continues at NCSU. She is in the marching band, the pep band, the Agronomy Club and dances with the NCSU Clogging Team.
Dr. Bob Keys, president of RCC, feels the recognition is well deserved. "Megan blossomed and really came into her own while at RCC. She represents the epitome of the success of the community college student."
