*Calculation of Curriculum FTE is as follows: One student who takes 16 hours of class instruction per semester (16 weeks) for two semesters generates 512 hours, or one annual curriculum FTE

1 Annual Curriculum FTE = 16 hours x 16 weeks x 2 semesters = 512 Hours
*Calculation of Extension FTE is as follows: One student who takes 16 hours of class instruction per semester (16 weeks) for two semesters generates 512 hours. Further, the 512 hours is added to the result of multiplying 16 hours of instruction by 11 weeks for the summer session, resulting in 688 hours, or one annual extension FTE.
1 Annual Extension FTE = 16 hours x 16 weeks x 2 semesters = 512 + (16 hours x 11 weeks for summer) = 688 hours.
**Cost to an individual to take an occupational extension course more than twice in a five year period is $7.03 per hour of instruction for a Tier 2 course ($4,836.79 688 = $7.03) and $6.34 per hour of instruction for a Tier 3 course ($4,361.38 688 = $6.34).

NOTE: A two semester average is used for curriculum (credit) classes, and a three semester average is used for extension (non-credit) classes for annual FTE calculation purposes. In order for a college to generate instructional positions, a specified number of FTEs must be earned. Instructional positions are allocated based on FTEs generated by program area. The amount of funding available for both curriculum (credit) and extension (non-credit) instructional positions varies by fiscal year, depending on the amount of state funds made available for this purpose.
