Statewide “Race 4 Literacy” campaign heads to the Winner’s Circle

“Radio” and his coach to appear

RALEIGH:  This is the final year of a three-year "Race 4 Literacy" campaign waged by the North Carolina Community College System’s Basic Skills and Literacy Office and its partnering organizations across the state.  The culmination celebration takes place during the statewide 2006 North Carolina Basic Skills and Literacy Conference in Winston-Salem where dedicated professionals will gather on August 2 for a three-day conference designed to provide them with information, enlightenment, and encouragement to enable them to provide even better service to their clients.

The conference theme is "In the Winners' Circle."  The emphasis this year is on building awareness of successes with stakeholders.  The conference will be held at the Twin City Quarter (formerly The Adam’s Mark) in Winston-Salem.  The conference will include concurrent information workshops, informative general sessions, and vendor presentations.

One conference highlight is the appearance of football coach Harold Jones and his friend, James Robert Kennedy, who became affectionately known as “Radio.” Their story was told in a heartwarming movie entitled “Radio,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Radio) and Ed Harris (Coach Jones).  “Radio” is mentally-challenged man who became a student at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, South Carolina. The friendship between the two men has extended over several decades.  Radio transformed from a shy, tormented man into an inspiration to his community.  Their message is all about breaking down attitudinal barriers, looking beyond the disability and seeing the ability.

Toni Cordell, a nationally known speaker in the fields of literacy and health will address the hundreds of individuals across North Carolina who work tirelessly to improve the state’s literacy rate.  The most consistent theme of Cordell’s presentations is to gently challenge the audience to "Turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones," a message that will ring true with the participants.

The registration deadline for the conference is July 21.  Online registration is available.  The North Carolina Community College System has all the information about the conference and registration forms on its Website:

http://www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/Basic_Skills/Conference%202006/2006_Conference_Index.htm

In addition to the conference, there are Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) pre-conference workshops on Tuesday, August 1, 10:00a.m, - 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, August 2, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Information about these sessions is also available on the Website.

The registration fee for each participant and presenter is $125.  This fee covers all breaks, workshop materials, and event meals on Thursday and Friday.  Hotel reservations have to be made individually at the Twin City Quarter (877) 888-9762.  The room rate is $57.25/single plus tax and an additional $6.00 per day parking fee.  Participants are encouraged to make reservations early.  The overflow hotel is the Wingate Inn, with a $67.00/single rate and no parking fee.

Each college, community-based organization, and Even Start program is asked to bring at least one door prize to be offered during the conference.

The conference is a collaborative effort of the NCCCS, NC Department of Public Instruction's Even Start program, the North Carolina Literacy Association, and UNC-TV.  This collaborative effort ensures a more in-depth program with a concentration in family literacy.
