Six Community College Students Join State Summer
Internship Program
RALEIGH -- Six community college students throughout North Carolina
will participate in the North Carolina State Government Internship
Program. The program is run by the Youth Advocacy and Involvement
Office of the North Carolina Department of Administration.
Only two community college students participated in the program in
2005. Officials at the System Office and the Youth Advocacy and
Involvement Office worked together to increase awareness of the
program on the campuses of the state’s 58 community colleges.
H. Martin Lancaster, system president, said he is pleased by the
increase in student participation. “I feel that it’s important for
community college students to make the most of the opportunities
available to them,” he said. “The state’s internship program is a
good way for students to learn about different careers.”
According to the Governor’s office, 600 students from 82 counties
and 79 post-secondary institutions applied for this year’s
internships, an increase from 440 applications last year. Through a
competitive selection process overseen by the North Carolina
Internship Council, a total of 80 students were selected to work in
projects in 18 departments and 41 divisions. Students are paid $8.25
an hour for their jobs, which take them across North Carolina to
