Community Colleges Honor Academic Excellence Award Recipients

RALEIGH: The North Carolina Community College System honored 118 high achievers from the 58 community colleges and the North Carolina Center for Applied Textile Technology. The students, selected by the colleges, were recognized for their accomplishments at a ceremony on May 14. NCCCS President H. Martin Lancaster, State Board of Community Colleges Chair James J. Woody and Dr. James Owen, President of the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents, participated in the tribute to the students.

The goal of the Academic Excellence Award is to recognize excellence and encourage scholarship among the more than 780,000 students of the NCCCS. The students selected at each institution have set the highest possible goals and attained the pinnacle of academic success in the Community College System. A complete list of recipients is attached.

Three students were selected to represent the group by presenting their personal community college stories as part of the ceremony. Each student had a very different experience but shared similar feelings about their respective community colleges.  (Their speeches are attached.)

Allen Percy Butler of Brunswick Community College is a 38 year-old resident of Bolivia, NC. Butler is an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and works full time as a technical training instructor at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport for Carolina Power and Light. A father of four, he completed most of his coursework using distance learning methods. He received an Associate in Science degree last Friday and will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University later this week. Butler credited his employers at CP&L for "adjusting schedules to maximize my participation in the courses." He also thanked his "qualified instructors who could adjust to teaching older full-time employed students."

Kelly Ann Gunter of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College was a 31-year-old high school dropout when she went to A-B Tech three years ago, to "take a second chance." In addition to being employed at the Mission St. Joseph's Health System, she has been SGA President at A-B Tech for the last two years and is a recipient of Who's Who Among Community College Students. Kelly will graduate from the college transfer program in August with an Associate in Arts degree. She plans to attend Western Carolina University where she will study social work. She thanked her community college for giving her a second chance. She talked about the diverse backgrounds of the community college students but added they all share one thing. "Passion to strive for success is the common thread that binds students with different backgrounds."

Ryan Kenyon McCain of Cleveland Community College graduated last week with an Associate in Arts degree in the college transfer program. While at Cleveland, he served as President of the Student Government Association and organized a number of campus events including five bloodmobiles. McCain is Assistant Pastor at his church, Macedonia Missionary Baptist in Waco, NC. He plans to study the ministry and history at Gardner-Webb University beginning this fall. He told his fellow honorees that it is important to "know where you’re going so you know which road to take." He thanked Cleveland CC for giving him the opportunity to make "the dreams of his family his reality."
