Community College to set up furniture shop at the General Assembly
RALEIGH: If you want someone to know exactly what you are doing, show them! That’s the theory behind a series of Legislative Days sponsored by the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association. The latest in the series takes place on Tuesday, April 24, and is hosted by the Furniture Production Technology department at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory.
Students and instructors from CVCC will be in the North Lobby of the Legislative Building from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM demonstrating a portion of what is taught to students in the program.
During the presentation students will completely build and upholster a wingback side chair, the same frame that all second year Furniture Production Technology students are required to complete. Anyone who visits the demonstration will be encouraged to enter his or her name in a special drawing to be held at the end of the day. The prize will be that professionally hand-made chair!
Previous demonstrations have been hosted by the Cosmetology program at Bladen Community College (Dublin), the Truck Driver Training program at Johnston Community College (Smithfield), and the Computer Programming curriculum at Fayetteville Technical Community College (Fayetteville).
Students and instructors have shared information about their respective programs to give the lawmakers a sense of the importance of what is taught at community colleges, the need for salary increases for faculty and professional staff, and the role community colleges play in North Carolina’s economy.
Among the future presentations planned is a May 16th presentation from the Robotics program at Wake Technical Community College (Raleigh).
