STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT H. MARTIN LANCASTER
CONCERNING THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF PRESIDENT MOLLY BROAD'S RETIREMENT FROM
THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA

FYI: President Lancaster and President Broad both came to work in July 1997.

President Molly Broad's impact on higher education in North Carolina has been profound. During our first meeting in 1997, she expressed her concern about the low college-going rate among North Carolina's young people. President Broad has been a driving force in several initiatives that have helped push North Carolina above the national average in the number of our recent high school graduates going on to college.

Perhaps the greatest contribution to this dramatic accomplishment has been the implementation of PATHWAYS, which includes a comprehensive on-line service through the College Foundation of North Carolina for career exploration and one-stop, on-line application for college admission and financial aid to attend any college in North Carolina, public or private, two-year or four-year.

President Broad has raised the academic sights of high school students by her leadership in adopting a more rigorous basic high school curriculum. All higher-education institutions and the students themselves benefit as we reduce the need for remediation at community colleges and universities and improve student performance.

President Broad's enthusiastic embrace of the university's role in economic development will yield rich dividends for years to come.

The passage of the higher education bond referendum in 2000 will be another star in Molly Broad's crown. President Broad worked tirelessly across the state for passage, and her efforts resulted in a strong, positive vote in every county. The buildings on each of our campuses will be a testament to her visionary leadership.

North Carolina will miss the strong leadership of Molly Broad in the implementation of important new and on-going collaborative efforts to make education in our state as seamless as possible from pre-kindergarten to doctoral degrees.

Molly's friends in higher education and the larger community are pleased that she will remain in North Carolina sharing her wisdom and knowledge with future generations.
