State Board to recognize excellent service for small businesses

“Bio Bus” to be displayed in front of Caswell Building on Thursday

RALEIGH: The State Board of Community Colleges will recognize the excellent service provided by all community college Small Business Centers across the state by honoring three outstanding Small Business Centers (SBC) this week.  The Excellent Small Business Center Awards presentation is part of the regular State Board meeting which begins at 9:00 a.m. in the State Board Room of the Caswell Building on Friday, May 19.

A dilapidated warehouse becomes a showcase for business, culture, and cuisine.  An Arts Incubator brings new life into a flagging downtown area.  A cancer survivor realizes her dream to open her own barber school. These success stories were made possible through the efforts of the three Small Business Centers to be recognized on Friday.  A statewide winner will be chosen from the three Regional Small Business Centers of Excellence: Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro (Western), Central Carolina Community College in Sanford (Central), and Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville (Eastern).

The Small Business Center Network is comprised of SBCs at each of the 58 community college in North Carolina.  The centers provide counseling and other valuable services to budding entrepreneurs.  They also assist companies with 25 or fewer employees that are already in business, but want to become more successful.  George Millsaps is Executive Director of the statewide Small Business Center Network.  He will present the awards during the State Board meeting.

“Our Small Business Centers provide invaluable resources for businesses across North Carolina,” said Millsaps.  “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the counseling and guidance they receive at local SBCs enable them to thrive.”

Also on the agenda for the State Board is an Issues Luncheon on Thursday featuring a presentation by Susan Seymour, NCCCS BioNetwork Director, on the successful and increasing number of Biotechnology programs offered by community colleges.   After the presentation the Board will also have their first look at the new BioNetwork Mobile Laboratory, which was funded by Golden LEAF.

The BioNetwork Bus extends capabilities of the BioNetwork.  The bus will travel to company sites across North Carolina with state-of-the-art equipment and a qualified instructor on board to provide training to employees.  It can also provide support to community colleges that may not have specialized equipment when smaller local companies or startups require biotechnology training.

The full agenda follows.
