Halifax Community College to host State Board of Community Colleges

RALEIGH – The State Board of Community Colleges conducts a retreat that is coupled with an on-location meeting at one of the 58 community colleges in the North Carolina Community College System each fall. The tradition gives the Board a chance to visit a campus and interact with college personnel and students. Halifax Community College in Weldon hosts the State Board for this fall meeting and retreat. The day-and-a-half retreat begins on Wednesday, October 17 at 9:00 a.m. and the State Board meeting officially begins with a noon Issues Luncheon on Thursday, October18.  All State Board events take place at The Centre on the Halifax CC campus.

The retreat gives the State Board the opportunity to address issues related to their governance of the NC Community College System. It begins with a walking tour of the Halifax campus to provide Board members a chance to personally see the college in action.

Some of the issues on the retreat agenda include: a presentation on the relationship and authority of the State Board, local Trustees, and college Presidents; a look at the progress and challenges of the System’s Strategic Plan; policy issues related to Performance Measures; and the impact future changes in credential requirements for nursing faculty will have on the System.

The final session is a presidential debate on the pros and cons of intercollegiate athletics with Dr. Ron Lingle of Coastal Carolina Community College opposing athletics and squaring off against Dr. Robert Keys of Rockingham Community College who supports athletics.  Eighteen community colleges presently have intercollegiate athletic teams.

The formal State Board meeting begins on Thursday with a luncheon presentation by Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Halifax Community College president, on its 40 years of service to the community. Dr. Griffin will be invested as the fourth president of Halifax CC at noon on Friday, after the State Board meeting. Members of the Board and System Office personnel will attend.

Items expected to be placed before the State Board during the Friday morning session include consideration of four new community college presidents. This month the Board is also expected to consider proposed restrictions on the use of Student Activity Fees. The Board raised the fee cap from $38 to $65 last month.

Mr. Herbert Watkins, chair of the Presidential Search Committee, will give a progress report. System President H. Martin Lancaster has announced his May 1, 2008 retirement.
