Report to State Board: Businesses say community college training programs exceed expectations
Raleigh:
The majority of North Carolina businesses surveyed say workforce training provided by the North Carolina Community College System for new jobs "exceeds highest expectations." The New and Expanding Industry Training (NEIT) program is nationally recognized for the workforce training that it provides to North Carolina’s new businesses and those experiencing growth. The NEIT Trends and Statistics 2000-2001 Report that will be presented to the State Board of Community Colleges at its September 21 meeting shows employers feel the training meets their company’s needs.Employers were surveyed to determine if their training expectations were met. 57.5% said the training was excellent, "requiring no improvement and exceeding expectations." 41.4% ranked the training very good, meeting company needs at a "highly acceptable level." The remaining 1.1% said training was "acceptable."
Employers were also asked to rank the impact of the training on the company’s operations. Again, rankings were high. 44.8% ranked the impact as "excellent." 48.3% ranked it as "very good" and the remaining 6.9% said it was "acceptable."
Effectiveness in preparing employees for productivity was the third category ranked. 45.5% ranked the training "excellent," 50% "very good " and the remaining 4.5% said the training was "acceptable."
The report also shows an increase in training since the previous report. There were more training projects (up 3%), more workers trained (up 19%) and there was an increase in the number of rural trainees (up 11%) when compared with 1999-2000 statistics. More than 24-thousand individuals received training and two-thirds of the 203 training projects conducted were located in rural counties.
Dr. Scott Ralls, NCCCS Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development, is particularly proud of the training provided in rural counties. He pointed out that "Sixty percent of this training was with expanding North Carolina companies and fifteen percent of the total projects were with expanding North Carolina textile facilities."
The NEIT supports the economic development efforts of the State by providing education and training opportunities for new and expanding businesses. The program, which began in 1958, is the first state-supported customized training program and has been copied by other states. The program is designed to respond quickly to the needs of businesses, and to respect the confidential nature of the proprietary process and information within those businesses and has been ranked one of the top worker training programs in the United States by Expansion Management magazine.
In addition to the training report, the State Board will review a System Office plan to encourage and promote equal opportunities for Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs) in System procurement and contracting services.
