HOLIDAY BONUS FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATIONS
Five Benefit from Instructional Trust Fund
legislation
RALEIGH: Five community college foundations are each $25,000 richer, thanks to the efforts of Senator Walter Dalton and the generosity of the North Carolina General Assembly.
In the last legislative session, Sen. Dalton introduced a bill to provide matching funds of up to $25,000 for the foundation of each community college. In Dalton's proposal, every two dollars of new money raised would be matched by one dollar of State funds, up to the $25,000 maximum. Dalton's legislation was eventually ratified by the General Assembly and included in the 2003-04 Budget Bill to provide this additional funding for the North Carolina Community College System.
The Community College Trust Fund supplements monies raised by community college foundations to enhance the academic missions of community colleges.
The foundations of Alamance Community College, Central Piedmont Community College, College of The Albemarle, Guilford Technical Community College and Piedmont Community College, each raised $ 50,000 required to receive the $25,000 maximum in State funds available from the Trust Fund. They are the first colleges to claim the money.
This $50,000 in new foundation money may be used in a variety of ways, Resource Center materials, professional development of instructional faculty and professional staff, and other purposes authorized by the State Board consistent with the college's mission.
The matching $25,000 in State funds must be dedicated to scholarships or financial aid for needy students at each community college.
