RALEIGH – Exceptional art from fifty-one of North Carolina’s community colleges covers the walls, adorns tables and is displayed in many corners of the Caswell Building at the corner of McDowell and West Jones streets. This historic building with a distinguished past now has a more recent distinction. For the last few years it has served not only as the offices of the State Board of Community Colleges and the System; it has also been converted into an art gallery, providing a visual feast for the senses.

This is the third year of the North Carolina Community College System art exhibit, the brainchild of NCCCS President H. Martin Lancaster, who is a past chairman of the North Carolina Arts Council. Lancaster invited community college faculty, staff and students to submit pieces for his consideration. He says the goal was to receive pieces that would "showcase the excellent work created in the North Carolina Community College System and enhance the environment for those of us who work in the Caswell Building."

After President Lancaster issues the request for art from the colleges, Chancy Kapp, Assistant to the President for External Affairs, catalogs the entries. This year Ms. Kapp had more than 700 submissions to organize, the largest response to date. "We have participation from some colleges who have not participated before including Brunswick, Rowan-Cabarrus, and Bladen," she said.

President Lancaster takes a very personal interest in the exhibit. "I am delighted with the continued and growing enthusiasm for this project," says Lancaster. He eventually decides which pieces will be accepted and where they will be placed in the building, often placing them there personally. "The staff really enjoys the exhibit. When art comes in, I am lobbied hard to put certain pieces in specific work areas," he says.

A reception will open the display and honor the artists at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28 at the Caswell Building. People participating in the reception will include the artists, members of the State Board of Community Colleges, and a host of other community college leaders and supporters.

The 111 works by 93 artists on display include various media – 70 paintings, drawings and photographs; six fiber, fabric and wall art; 27 3-D objects including large and small sculptures and furniture; four stained or leaded glass pieces for hanging; one computer graphics piece and one video animation.

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College has the most artists represented (6) and the most pieces (9). Central Piedmont Community College, Halifax Community College, Western Piedmont Community College and Carteret Community College each have four artists represented. Photographer Michael Little of Southeastern Community College has the largest number of works from a single artist, with five outstanding pieces selected.

The exhibit will be on display through December when it will be replaced by a new selection of art. (A list of the exhibit is attached, however some pieces have not been placed and others may be moved before the reception.)

The North Carolina Community College System, with more than 747,000 students, is the third largest community college system in the United States. The System is the state=s primary agency for delivery of job training, literacy and adult education programs.
