Governors Headline Higher Education Bonds Forum
RALEIGH: A Higher Education Bonds Forum featuring Governor Jim Hunt as the Keynote Speaker is scheduled in conjunction with the North Carolina Community Colleges Instructors Conference. The forum will take place on Monday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guilford Ballroom of the Sheraton Greensboro Hotel/ Koury Convention Center. The forum will inform Triad area residents about the facilities needs of community colleges and public universities and emphasize the importance of the November 7 referendum on the Higher Education Bonds.
The organizations sponsoring the Bonds Forum include the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees (NCACCT), the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents (NCACCP), and the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association (NCCCFA).
In addition to Gov. Hunt’s keynote address, others scheduled to speak at the forum include former Governor Jim Holshouser, former Governor Bob Scott, NCA&T Chancellor Jim Renick, UNC-G Chancellor Pat Sullivan, NCCBI leader Phil Phillips and NCCCS President Martin Lancaster.
The Higher Education Bonds Forum will take place as a part of the Instructors Conference, which is held every other year and is the largest gathering of community college professionals. The conference theme is Technology and Learning. More than 300 instructors will make presentations during the three-day gathering, sharing information on everything from "Digital Architecture" to "Online Tutorials for Nursing Students." On-site demonstrations include one from Guilford Technical Community College on "Interactive Math" and a tour of the Virtual Learning Community.
While the primary focus is technology and its application in the classroom, non-technical topics will also be discussed during the conference. Sessions include "Establishing and Maintaining a Community College Theatre" and "Critical Thinking in Biology." "The presentations are as varied as the courses offered by our colleges," says Dr. Delores Parker, Vice President for Academic and Student Services. "This conference provides an excellent opportunity for our community college instructors to share valuable information with each other that will enhance the teaching and learning experience on our campuses."
The Instructors Conference begins on Sunday, October 8 at 10:30 a.m. and continues through Tuesday afternoon, October 10. NCCCS President Lancaster will give a keynote address on Monday morning at 8:45 a.m. at the General Session.
