Community Colleges Applaud Independent Colleges and Universities’ Bond Referendum Endorsement

RALEIGH: "The relationship that exists among North Carolina’s community colleges and independent colleges and universities is strong. This endorsement is further indication of the depth of cooperation between our organizations," said North Carolina Community College System President H. Martin Lancaster.

Lancaster responded to the announcement that the Board of Trustees of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities endorsed the $3.1 billion Higher Education Facilities Bond Referendum today, September 22. The NCICU Board is comprised of the presidents of each of the 36 independent colleges and universities in North Carolina.

NCICU President Hope Williams serves on the Governor’s Education Cabinet along with Lancaster, University of North Carolina President Molly Broad and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Ward. "The independent colleges and universities are a part of the broader Higher Education community of the state," said Williams. "We believe that as individual sectors of Higher Education are strengthened, so too are all sectors strengthened," she added.

The bond issue is on the November 7 ballot. Voter approval will provide $600 million in capital funding for the North Carolina Community College System and $2.5 billion for the University of North Carolina.
