Sandhills Community College Combines Rodin and Internet for Innovative On-Line Course
Thanks to Sandhills Community College, the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Internet, art fans have a chance to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime Rodin exhibition and get college credit, too!
Sandhills is offering THE LIFE AND TIMES OF AUGUSTE RODIN from May 1 - June 24 as an ON-LINE curriculum course. Registration is open until April 28. Listed as HUM 120 - Cultural Studies, the course is taught by Sandhills Art Professor Denise Baker. It will feature works by Rodin from the Los Angeles-based Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collection, and from other collections in the United States and France, on display at the museum in Raleigh from April 16 to August 13, 2000.
Sandhills and Professor Baker put the course together at the request of staff members of the North Carolina Museum of Art and the System Office of the North Carolina Community College System. Funded in part by the a grant from the State Board of Community Colleges, the course is an innovative experiment in using technology to collaborate on unique educational offerings. HUM 120 can be taken for 3 semester hours of college credit or for 4.8 CEUs (continuing education units) for teachers, so this is a terrific opportunity to learn, earn credit and have fun, too!

French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was regarded as the greatest living artist of his day and is considered one of the most innovative and influential sculptors since Michelangelo. The North Carolina Museum of Art's exhibition "Rodin: Sculpture from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections and Additional Works" (April 16-August 13, 2000) features more than 130 sculptures in bronze, marble, plaster, and terracotta selected from the world's foremost collections of Rodin's work. In addition to sculpture, the exhibition offers a rare selection of Rodin's drawings. A complementary exhibition focuses on Rodin and dance. The works of art explore key themes in Rodin's oeuvre, such as movement, dance, and emotive human poses and gestures. The exhibition features key monumental works or individual elements thereof, including The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais, and the Monument to Balzac.
Admission to the exhibition is by timed ticket for a specific date and time of entry. Advance tickets can be purchased from Ticketmaster. Day of visit tickets are available at the Museum Box Office during regular Museum hours. The Box Office is located in the lobby. For Ticketmaster, click on Buy Tickets at the bottom of the frame.
Museum hours
9 AM to 5 PM Tuesday through Saturday; 9 AM. to 9 PM Friday; 11 AM to 6 PM Sunday; closed Monday. The Museum will extend hours for the Rodin exhibition: Friday and Saturday until 10 PM and Sunday until 7 PM.
