Community college race car team to demonstrate for lawmakers

RALEIGH: The Motorsports Industry has exploded in North Carolina, creating a need for quality technical personnel. Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) in Hickory offers a program that prepares graduates to enter the industry well-trained and eager to work in this exciting field.

On Wednesday, July 11, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, CVCC will showcase its Bobby Isaac Motorsports Technology Program for the General Assembly as part of the legislative demonstration series sponsored by the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association (NCCCFA).

This demonstration includes a show car, built by the students, which will be parked in front of the Legislative Building. Race team members will demonstrate pit-style tire changes for the lawmakers. Additional information about the program and CVCC will be available inside the building in the North Lobby.

The Bobby Isaac Motorsports Technology Program was established as a memorial to the late NASCAR legend and champion. It is the only college hands-on program in the United States where students have the opportunity to actually build, field and serve as a pit crew for a car in a professional racing division. The student team builds three stock cars a year and competes in 20 races in the USAR ProCup racing series.

The goal of the Motorsports Technology program is to provide support for the growing industry. Since its inception in 1997 nearly 200 graduates of the program have been employed in the industry. Graduates are employed by some of the leading race teams: PPI, Rush, Penske, Brett Bodine, AJ Foyt, Hedrix and DEI.

The Motorsports Technology Program is nationally recognized, enrolling students from all over the country. In fact, 92% of the students have come from outside North Carolina.

More program information can be found at www.cvcc.cc.nc.us/specprog/racecar/bobby1.htm. A photo of the race team with their car is attached.

This demonstration is part of the series sponsored by the NCCCFA designed to illustrate the wide variety of programs taught at community colleges and to reinforce the need for faculty and professional staff salary increases. Salaries for community college faculty and professional staff are among the lowest in the country and are at the bottom in the region.
