CCC&TI Hosts Community College Presidents
BOONE:
Boone welcomed the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents July 25-27 as approximately 58 members headed to the mountains for their summer conference. Hosted by Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, the three-day meeting at the Quality Inn brought presidents together with state community college officials to review and deliberate various areas of concern facing higher education."We’re still fighting the need for additional money in light of budget implications and dealing with a number of special provisions coming out of the General Assembly, including the Under-16 Admissions Policy and employee contract issues," said K. Ray Bailey, president of the NCACCP and president of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. "Our goal is to achieve consistency across the state."
One of the highlights of the conference included Thursday night’s reception at the Broyhill House in Lenoir. Nearly 200 guests included presidents, state legislators, city council members, county commissioners and CCC&TI trustees.
"We are delighted to have you all here," said former U.S. Senator James T. Broyhill, welcoming guests to the family home, now owned by CCC&TI, and recognizing former colleague and North Carolina Community College System President, H. Martin Lancaster. Broyhill applauded the work of community colleges, noting that the state economy has benefited over the years largely in part due to such efforts in training, retraining and workforce development.
Other activities scheduled at the NCACCP conference included a picnic and concert featuring the David Grisman Quintet with Doc Watson at Appalachian State University’s Farthing Auditorium.
The NCACCP honored two retiring presidents, Ron Champion of Beaufort Community College and Desna Wallin of Forsyth Community College. The conference concluded as the gavel was passed on to new NCACCP president, Jim Owen of Piedmont Community College in Roxboro, appointed to the position for a one-year term.
Sponsors for the summer conference included ASU Chancellor Frank Borkowski, Paul and Faye Broyhill, the Bank of Granite, Broyhill Furniture Industries, Inc., CBSA Architects, Central Carolina Bank, Learning Environments, Inc. and Martin Boal Anthony and Johnson Architects.
