MEDIA ADVISORY

FINANCE COMMITTEE TO RECEIVE CONSULTANT’S FINAL REPORT

Raleigh: The Finance and Capital Needs Committee of the State Board of Community Colleges will hold a special meeting on Thursday, June 5 at 9:00AM in the Caswell Building.

The committee will receive the final report from Dr. Kent Caruthers of MGT of America, Inc., the consultant who has conducted a study of the North Carolina Community College System. The study was to determine if any streamlining of community colleges is needed and if so, how it could be accomplished. The study was mandated in legislation enacted in the last session of the General Assembly and is a comprehensive review of funding policies and models related to the administration and instructional support of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges.

Dr. Caruthers has conducted several meetings across the state to receive input from NCCCS stakeholders and has researched the operating methods of the colleges. In his preliminary report, Dr. Caruthers characterized the operations of the NCCCS as "lean and mean" when compared to community college systems in other states.

If the committee gives preliminary acceptance of the report on Thursday it will then be presented to the full State Board for final acceptance at its June 19th meeting. The report will also be presented to the Legislative Education Oversight Committee.

The Finance and Capital Needs Committee will also continue its work on the implementation of the College Information System (CIS) Project. They will receive staff reports on CIS implementation and will review issues related to the Accounts Receivable/Cash Receivable Cash Module.

The full agenda is attached.
