Senator Horton hosts Chinese higher education officials
at the Legislative Building
Raleigh: Senator Hamilton ("Ham") Horton (R-Forsyth) arranged a special tour of the North Carolina Senate Chamber on Thursday, June 9 for a Chinese delegation of technical college presidents and other senior higher education officials.
Senator Horton greeted the 22 men and women on the floor of the Senate and offered a succinct summary of the history and practice of North Carolina government. The visitors asked a number of detailed questions, focusing on differences between the Senate and the House and qualifications for membership. They expressed particular interest in the open access of legislative sessions to members of the media and to the general public.
Senator Horton hosted the visit at the request of the North Carolina Community College System, which shared responsibility for the delegation's tour of the state with the University of North Carolina System.
Dr. Alexander N. Chen, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Programs at UNC-Pembroke, coordinated the visit. The Chinese guests arrived in North Carolina on Tuesday, touring UNC-Chapel Hill and joining university and community college senior administrators for a dinner sponsored by the Office of the President of the University of North Carolina.
Wednesday, they toured Fayetteville Technical Community College and heard presentations from North Carolina Community College System President H. Martin Lancaster, Fayetteville Technical Community College President Dr. Larry Norris and other community college presidents. UNC-Pembroke hosted an afternoon tour, social and dinner.
Before joining Senator Horton at the Legislative Building, the delegation members toured Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh. Their last stop was the Governors' Exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of History.
