State Board of Community Colleges meets at Sandhills
Community College
RALEIGH: The State Board of Community Colleges travels to
Pinehurst October 19-21 (Wednesday-Friday) for its annual retreat
and regular monthly meeting.
The State Board usually holds meetings on campuses twice each year,
a regular meeting in the spring and a retreat and regular meeting in
the fall. This year Sandhills Community College is host for the fall
meetings.
Retreat sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday and at 9:30 a.m.
on Thursday. The State Board meeting begins on Thursday afternoon
with an Issues Luncheon, which will be a presentation on Sandhills
Community College by its president, Dr. John Dempsey. Committee
meetings follow the luncheon and the full Board meets on Friday at
9:00 a.m. Everything will be held on the Sandhills campus except the
Issues Luncheon, which will be held at the Pine Needles Lodge and
Golf Club.
Board members will hear presentations and participate in discussion
about the needs and training of tomorrow’s workforce, distance
education, succession planning to ensure the personnel needs of the
future are met, and providing programs on a more regional basis.
Three new members join the Board this month. Nancy Margulies Brenner
of Greensboro was appointed to the seat formerly occupied by
Chairman James Woody. Brenner is active in local community affairs.
The Honorable Jimmie Ford is a former legislator and county
commissioner from Goldsboro. He replaces Ann Turlington. Both
Brenner and Ford will serve until June 2011. John Q. Shaw, Jr. of
Dunn has been appointed to fill the unexpired two-year term of
George Battle. Shaw is President, CEO, and Director of New Century
Bancorp. The new members and existing members will hear a
presentation on the statutory responsibilities of the State Board.
