Community colleges to salute academic excellence

RALEIGH:  High achieving community college students from across North Carolina will gather in Raleigh for special recognition this week.  The Hilton North Raleigh is the location of the ninth annual Academic Excellence Awards luncheon at noon on Thursday, April 27.  The North Carolina Community College System will celebrate student achievement and recognize some of the most talented students attending North Carolina’s community colleges.

This is the largest System-wide awards event, honoring two students from each of the 58 community colleges.  The 116 students were selected by the individual colleges for their academic accomplishments and leadership ability.  These are students who excel in the classroom and are also dedicated to making a difference on their campuses and in their communities.

“These students enrolled in their respective community colleges because they knew they would find the resources they needed to put them on a path to success,” said System President H. Martin Lancaster.  “Each man and woman had the guidance of talented instructors and the support of loving family and friends to encourage them towards excellence.”

The student testimonials are the most emotional and uplifting portion of the day.  Three students will each share his or her personal community college experience with the audience.  Vontella Dabbs of Cherryville is slated to receive an AAS degree in Business Administration from Cleveland Community College.  Metzi Latham Hopkins of Troy is a college transfer student at Montgomery Community College.  The third speaker, Roger Dale Portis of Mount Airy, is pursuing an AAS in Information Systems/Networking Administration at Surry Community College.  These three student speakers represent the mosaic of students and stories that are the heart of North Carolina’s community colleges.

A musical performance by a member of the community college family is part of the celebration each year.  Haley Hoyle, a student at Cleveland Community College, will serenade the students this year.

Governor Mike Easley has proclaimed April 27 “Academic Excellence in Community Colleges Day” as part of the recognition.  Numerous legislators are expected to attend the luncheon to pay tribute to the students from the colleges in the districts they represent.

The event is a joint effort sponsored by the State Board of Community Colleges and the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents.  Several colleges and organizations provide mementos for the students.  They will receive plaques prepared at the System Office, medallions forged at Pitt Community College, key rings made at Wayne Community College, and t-shirts provided by Gaston College.  The Faculty Association and Instructional Administrators also donated items to honor the students.

The North Carolina Community College System is the state’s primary provider of workforce training, adult education and literacy programs. The System’s 58 institutions enroll 800,000 adults.
