Statement from H. Martin Lancaster, President
North Carolina Community College System
Response to Budget Proposal from Governor Michael F. Easley
"I applaud and greatly appreciate the Governor's funding
recommendations for the North Carolina Community College System. It
is clear that Governor Easley understands and supports the important
role that our System plays in preparing North Carolina’s citizens to
be more productive contributors to the state’s economy.
“This budget presented today addresses some major areas of concern:
our continuing enrollment growth, increasing the salaries of faculty
and professional staff on our campuses, technology enhancement,
equipment needs, and providing the personnel that will enable our
colleges to better serve our students who need more support
services.
“Significant support for our distance learning efforts is
particularly encouraging. Our Virtual Learning Community had reached
its maximum capacity without an infusion of targeted financial
support. This is the first time the Governor has included this
important area and we are grateful.
“Equipment needs at our colleges and at the System Office are
serious. Resource requirements have increased as the need for high
technology training grows. The funds proposed in the Governor’s
budget will help the NCCCS upgrade facilities on our campuses and
better serve our students.
“Our colleges have taken significant cuts in the Academic and
Student Services area. In his budget, the Governor is returning some
of those lost funds that will enable us to serve those students who
come to us in need of specialized assistance in counseling,
financial aid, and other areas.
“I urge the General Assembly to build on the recommendations the
Governor has made for community colleges as they work to create a
budget that will meet the needs of North Carolina’s citizens.”
