Pam Bizzell
After working in the manufacturing industry for thirty-five years, I have had the opportunity to train for a new career. My anxiety almost caused me to turn down the challenge; being in a classroom with computer-savvy teenagers was not something that I was looking forward to. I was terrified of being an older student and returning to the academic arena after so many years. However, what I envisioned would be a tremendous disadvantage, actually proved to be a benefit as I began my college experience.
One important element of college success is being acutely aware of your priorities. Somewhere between starting a family and turning fifty, one becomes conscious of their mortality and begins to appreciate opportunities on a completely different level. That appreciation equates to putting your heart and soul into learning. Knowing what is important in life becomes clearer as you age.
Another component of college success is good time management skills. Having worked in a production-oriented environment, having raised a family, and having kept a household running smoothly, has proven to be excellent training in time management. The fact that I am not the typical college student has been an immense advantage for me.
