Desiree Ferguson

Desiree Ferguson The primary reasoning for me choosing to begin my education at Davidson County Community College is because of the smaller school size. It was important for me to attend a college where I could comfortably build the confidence I needed when interacting with other people. Coming from a rural town, I felt that I would be overwhelmed if I went to a university when I graduated from high school. Also, attending a community college was more feasible for me financially. As a young independent student, I had to make sure that the cost was affordable.

During my time at Davidson County Community College, I have continued to be a student of high caliber. I have maintained a superior grade point average and am committed to continued academic achievement. I was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement. I also served as a student ambassador and member of the Early Childhood Educators Club, while at Davidson County Community College. These opportunities allowed me to engage in leadership activities that focused on involvement in the community. I also became a member of the National Association for the Education of the Young Child while at Davidson County Community College.

As the sole provider of my child, financial aid has played a crucial role in my educational experience. Being able to receive financial assistance from the federal government and Community College System has allowed me to make my dreams of becoming a teacher a reality. My Early Childhood Professor at Davidson County Community College has inspired me to teach because she is a great educator. Observing her effectiveness and passion for the field of education has sparked a flame in me that I did not realize was there.

It is my desire to enhance the lives of others as she has done. In 2005, I received my A.A.S. Degree in Early Childhood Associate from Davidson County Community College and soon learned after being employed by Lexington City Schools that I needed my degree to be in Elementary Education rather than in Birth-Kindergarten Education, in order to be employable. I quickly decided to reenroll at Davidson County Community College to finish my Associate in General Education Degree to be eligible to transfer to A&T University in Elementary Education.

I am in the second year of the Associate of General Education program at Davidson County Community College, which will provide a smooth transition to A&T University where I will complete my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education on the community college campus. I am currently working as a Teacher Assistant in Lexington City School System for the fourth year. On December 27, 2008 I completed and passed the Praxis I examination for Teacher Education. I will begin my education with A&T University beginning June 2009.

I am grateful that I chose Davidson County Community College as my first institution of higher learning. Now, more than ever I believe that pursuing my goals at Davidson County Community College has been the best option. To date, the experiences that I have had have proven to be more than I could have ever imagined.

The Davidson County Community College has many options to offer first time students as well as those that are returning.
