Amanda Keaton

Amanda Keaton As a wife and mother of three children, Amanda Keaton had given up on the thought of attending nursing school, until her husband was involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a catastrophic brain injury and paraplegia. Seeing his care and treatment by other nurses renewed her interest. One day she was passing by BCC and decided to stop and fill out an application, which led to her acceptance in the Practical Nursing program.

Completing the program was a challenge for Amanda. "The third day, it hit me. I remember sitting in the bathroom, crying, because with three kids, I didn't think I could to it," Amanda says. But with help from her mother and the support of her children, husband, and "awesome instructors," Amanda graduated from Brunswick Community College's Practical Nursing program in May 2008. Upon completion, she was awarded the Connie Milliken Scholarship for the highest grade point average and the Calabash Lady Elks Scholarship for meeting certain criteria including leadership skills and academics.
