Keisha Parker
Keisha Parker is an Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College graduate who earned a 4.0 every semester from 2006 until she graduated in 2008. She received A-B Tech Foundation Scholarships for her academic achievements, and was nominated for a prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship.
Nine years ago, Parker's life was a different story. "At 15, I left home. By 16, I was homeless, an experience that was scary and valuable. I saw some of our country's natural wonders and experienced some of America's challenging sociological issues firsthand, but I ate out of trashcans and slept under bridges and behind Dumpsters. After a couple of winters, I knew what I did not want my life to be," she said.
Out of eight children, Keisha is the first in her family to attend college. "If I had gone straight to a four-year school, it would have been intimidating. I wouldn't have had nerve to step into a university. After A-B Tech, the transition was much easier for me," she said.
She plans to get her bachelor's degree, studying ESL at Georgia State.
