Carver Machine Works

Carver Machine Works When Beaufort County business Carver Machine Works, Inc., wanted to expand its operations to the aerospace industry and increase its work force, the company turned to Beaufort County Community College for help in funding worker training to help make that expansion a reality.

In 2008, BCCC received $62,606 from the Economic and Workforce Development Division of N.C.'s Community College System that helped train Carver Machine Works, Inc., employees in the new skills needed. The grant provided funds for training in advanced welding procedures, materials handling and testing, industrial maintenance and documentation processes required by the aerospace industry for the entire production work force at Carver Machine Work, Inc., an employee-owned corporation founded in 1976.

The company began operations as a general machine shop, primarily operating as a rebuild facility for an Aurora, N.C., phosphate mine. "This is a wonderful example of home-grown economic development," said Lentz Stowe, director of BCCC's Business and Industry Services which worked with Carver Machine works to develop the grant. Carver was expected to nearly double its work force as a result.

"Carver Machine Works realizes that servicing our customers by employing highly skilled people is the fundamental ingredient to the long-term success of our company," said Melissa Simons, Carver human relations manager. "The training will open doors to a growing market while providing the solid quality systems needed to ensure we continue to provide the highest level of service to our existing customer base."
