Lisha Steed

Lisha Steed Lisha Steed, RN, of Aberdeen was delighted to get into Richmond Community College's Associate Degree Nursing program. The seed to become a nurse was planted when she was 16 and became her grandmother's caregiver. During her 13 years in a textile mill, she moved from the production line to customer service. She picked up her CNA along the way, began private duty work and eventually became a hospital CNA.

Her skills took her through an associate degree program at one community college and five years later through RCC's nursing program. Sometimes working four jobs, she graduated in May and now works in an outpatient cancer center. It's her dream job.

Because of the number of times she faced setbacks with family illnesses and financial crises, she tells people to never give up and "if you get knocked down, get back up."

Steed is pursuing her Oncology Nursing certification. The cancer center is affiliated with a regional hospital, where she is participating in their clinical ladder program. And yes, she has begun her bachelor's degree in nursing.

"I can't say enough good things about RCC for preparing me to be here," she said.
