Jay Petty
Jay Petty, an alumnus of Beaufort County Community College, was one of four teachers chosen to be the first faculty members at a new Early College High School established on the BCCC campus in 2008. Petty, who graduated from BCCC in 2002 with an associate's degree in electronic engineering, is the science teacher for the county's newest high school. He teaches earth science, physical science, biology, and chemistry.
Petty is a graduate of Calvary Christian High School in Forest City, Ark. Petty joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1994 and served as an aircraft electrician. He became familiar with eastern North Carolina while serving at New River Air Station in Jacksonville, N.C. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1999, Petty chose to stay in the region.
Petty said it was his experiences at BCCC that encouraged him to become a teacher. "I found a real love of science and teaching," he said. "It just never came about until I got to BCCC."
After graduating from BCCC, he transferred to East Carolina University where he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 2004. After graduation, he taught math and science at Washington High School before moving to Southside High School where he served prior to joining the Early College High School faculty.
