Russell Smith
Washington merchant Russell Smith believes in giving back to the community that has made him a success in his men's clothing business. That's why the 1975 graduate of then Beaufort County Technical Institute, now Beaufort County Community College, agreed to serve on the college's Board of Trustees.
Smith, owner of Russell's Men Shop, has close ties to BCCC. A Washington native, Smith graduated from Washington High School and earned an associate's degree in Marketing and Retail Technology from BCTI. He began his retail career as a BCTI cooperative work experience student at Hilton's, a men's clothing store in downtown Washington.
In 1983, Smith started his own business when he purchased Bowman's men's clothing store. His wife, Denice, earned an associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Assistant from BCTI and worked 30 years in her field before joining her husband in the store. The Smith's son, Zach, took courses at BCCC as a high school student before earning a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. And their daughter, Olivia, took online courses from BCCC while working in a medical supply firm in Wilmington.
"BCCC is a great asset to the community. I am enjoying learning more about the college as a trustee and learning about ways I can help," he said. "That's what it's all about—giving back."
