John Witherspoon
John Witherspoon has been a firefighter for more than 30 years, and during that time he has found Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College to be a great asset to his work. He was in the first group of students to earn their associate's degree in Fire Protection Technology.
Witherspoon, who now chairs the program, took his courses in 2001. “It's kind of fun to go to school for a particular field after you've been in that field. Even the non-curriculum courses are thoroughly enjoyable. Every instructor makes sure you get the maximum education for the dollar,” he said.
Firefighters work 24-hour shifts through a rotating schedule, the equivalent of about 56 hours a week. “Because of the 24-hour shift, A-B Tech provides a schedule conducive to firefighters. They bend over backward to accommodate our schedules,” John said. “A-B Tech has been a true partner with the fire service in this area – always an excellent relationship.”
