Willerwease McKoy
When Willerwease McKoy's husband died in 1995, she was heartbroken. It was like a pall had come over her life. But a chance decision to return to school “to take her mind off of her loss” has given her a new lease on life.
A Bladen County native and 1970 graduate of Bladenboro High School, McKoy married shortly after graduating and began her family right away. In the next few years she had three children.
For more than 15 years she worked periodically in the textile industry. She then worked part-time in the Head Start program for about two years until her husband became ill.
She was forced to quit her job to take care of him until his death.
It was shortly afterward that she enrolled in the Office Systems Technology program at Bladen Community College. She credits her success in school to dedicated instructors—especially Cynthia McKoy and Rebecca Jones—who “encouraged and inspired” her to excel.
She graduated with honors in May 1998 and applied for a position that had opened at the college. She was hired three months later and has been the Faculty Secretary ever since.
