Corey Johnson
"I will never have to worry about the rising costs of car insurance or getting a speeding ticket." That's what Corey Johnson tells his friends at Blue Ridge Community College. Corey was born with a rare genetic condition called oculocutaneous albinism. This condition causes vision abnormalities and limits his ability to do many things others take for granted. Throughout his life Corey has learned to take the obstacles created by his illness and turn them into learning experiences.
Blue Ridge Community College has been one of the stepping stones in his life. He credits caring and interested faculty and staff in helping him become a more confident and independent person. "I never heard anyone complain when I ask them to enlarge a test or read a bulletin to me because the print was too small," Corey told other students at the College's annual Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon. "They were always there to help me."
Corey is continuing his pursuit of higher education. He will transfer in 2009 to Pensacola Christian College in Florida.
