Vinson McNeil
At age 16, Vinson McNeill had a car accident that would later prove life-changing. He became a diesel engine mechanic, but in 2004, at age 34, he found that he could no longer lift the heavy engine parts. His doctors said that an old neck injury from his accident would prevent his doing diesel work ever again.
Vinson decided to train for a new, but related career, by enrolling in Motorcycle Mechanics at Central Carolina Community College.
“It really prepared me,” he said. “I'd done a lot of mechanical work, but I had little technical training. At Central Carolina, I had first-class equipment and instructors who helped me succeed.”
Vinson now has a job he loves at a Harley-Davidson dealership. For overcoming obstacles to obtain workforce skills, he received an Outstanding Adult Participant Award from the 2008 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Workforce Development.
