Cathy Barbee
Cathy Barbee, single mother of three children, along with thousands of other laid-off textile workers, knows what it feels like to be out of work. After the initial shock wore off, she started looking for work and soon realized that hundreds of other displaced workers were looking for work too, leaving few job opportunities. Cathy remembers how terrified she felt when going to college, because it had been 20 years since she graduated from high school. “I have to admit that I was a little uneasy about going back to school, but I learned that SCC was convenient, affordable, and flexible; those were the things that were very important to me as a single parent,” explains Cathy.
Cathy notes, “The faculty and staff at SCC work hard to make every student feel special. Not only did I get my degree from SCC, but my two sons currently attend SCC. My 19-year old is working towards his Advertising and Graphic Design degree and my 15-year old attends Stanly Early College. I have found the ambition and motivation at SCC to face any challenge and know that I have the ability to succeed.”
