Zilla Hester
Zilla Hester returned to school to improve the quality of her life and she credits much of her success to lessons she learned while in school at Bladen Community College.
Born in Lumberton, NC, and reared in Bladen County, she graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1996. By the time she graduated, she had started her family. She began working after high school to support herself and her child.
Over the next several years she worked at a number of jobs, the last at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. After her son became ill forcing her to leave her job to care for him, she decided to return to school to improve her skills. She enrolled in the Business Administration program at BCC in 2001. After learning of a job at the office of a local attorney through Bladen JobLink, she applied for the position and worked part-time while attending college.
She graduated in 2003. She became a full-time employee at the firm and earned NC State Bar Paralegal Certification in March 2007. She continues to work as a paralegal at the firm.
Zilla is not the only one in her family to attend BCC. All three of her sisters attended and two of the three graduated.
